Navy CTM Brings Expertise to Waupaca Foundry

Lydia Engelbreth and Emily Schutte | Waupaca Foundry

Steve Durbin, during his 23 year military career.

Steve Durbin brought his 22 years of technical experience in the U.S. Navy when he joined the team at Waupaca Foundry in Effingham, Illinois.

After graduating from high school in 1978 in Strasburg, Illinois, Steve enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed bootcamp at the Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) in Illinois. He made his accession training (“A School”) selection as a Yeoman, which is a technical training in administration and clerical work, and trained at NTTC Meridian in Meridian, Mississippi. At that time, he aspired to become a legal clerk.

Steve’s initial four-year enlistment took him to Norfolk, Virginia and San Diego, California. He was discharged but then re-enlisted a year later. This time, he found a better fit as a Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance), known as a CTM.

Steve describes a CTM as “an electronics technician with a clearance.” His responsibilities included fixing radio and receiver equipment, line of sight and satellite communications, and coordinating with the NSA and CIS. In this role, he also completed installations on ships before they deployed.

The rest of Steve’s Navy career saw three deployments, one during Desert Storm, and a stint as a Navy recruiter back in Illinois. He also worked as an instructor – and later, as a supervisor – at NTTC Corry Station, Pensacola FL, training other CTMs.

After retiring from the military and trying a few other jobs, Steve found a natural fit for his skillset and personality at Waupaca Foundry. He is a born leader, with the ability to influence people and lead them effectively. Steve said he appreciates the chance to build interpersonal relationships with the members of his team, at Waupaca Foundry, just like in the military.

Waupaca Foundry is proud to employ many men and women who are veterans. Ten percent of our employees have served in uniform, and we thank you for your service.
